Wardrobe.NYC Brings Its Minimalist Touch to H&M in New Capsule Collection


Stella McCartney. Glenn Martens. Wardrobe.NYC? The near-decade-old Wardrobe.NYC label, founded by Josh Goot and Vogue Australia Editor in Chief Christine Centenera, may not be as globally renowned as H&M’s recent designer partners, but the mass retailer is passionate about the minimalist-driven collaboration.

When H&M first approached Wardrobe.NYC a little over a year ago, there was immediate buy-in. According to Goot, the goal was straightforward, and not too dissimilar from Wardrobe NYC’s own: to build the perfect capsule collection. “You don’t need any more pieces than you will have in this collection, to be honest,” Ann-Sofie Johansson, H&M’s Creative Advisor and Head of Design told Vogue. “You can just have them on constant rotation and create new looks.”

The lineup, which launches online and in select H&M stores on August 6, draws from Wardrobe.NYC’s sleek archive. “We looked back at our work and distilled down what we thought was the most essential, the most timeless, yet still of the moment that could combine to create a singular statement,” said Goot. At first glance, a T-shirt bodysuit may feel simple, but like any good elevated basic, it has a special twist (in this case, statement–making padded shoulders). The tailored denim mini skirt has something special going on too; its exposed seams give it an edgy corset-like feel. For shoes, there’s no need to choose between a heeled flip-flop and patent go-go boots: the two silhouettes are mashed into one.
