Michelle Obama Defies the Maximalist Summer Manicure Trend

Fruity decals! A fun French! Neon and chrome everything! Summer nail trends are all about maximalism and showing personality. But Michelle Obama is sticking to the classics with a pretty pastel set.

Last night, the former First Lady appeared in Chicago at the opening ceremony for the Barack Obama Presidential Center, joined of course by her husband, who was being honored, as well as their daughters Malia and Sasha, and other former First Ladies and presidents.

Michelle took to the podium in a tweedy, nautical striped navy and white skirt suit from Thom Browne, worn with a mix of jewelry by Rainbow K and Yvonne Léon. Her intricately braided hair was pulled back into two low buns. Making an emotional speech, her baby blue manicure added a romantic touch—it matched Barack’s neck-tie!—and the determinedly square shape also proved chic and polished.

“You told me all those years ago that you couldn’t promise me the world but you could promise me an interesting life, and, of course, you outdid yourself and managed to give me both,” she said of her husband. “I know it hasn’t always been easy but there hasn’t been a single second through this experience that standing by your side hasn’t left me in awe.”
